The Faceless Man (also known as "The Nameless One", "The Devil In The Hood", and "King of The Deadites") was a demon of great stature and power who was transformed into the first Deadite. In 1300 AD, The Faceless Man was accidentally released upon the world of the living by Ash Williams, and threatened to consume the souls of every being across time and space.
The Faceless Man first appeared in the 2014 comic Army of Darkness: Ash Gets Hitched #1, though he was first mentioned in Ash And The Army of Darkness #7.
Biography[]
Origins[]
The origins of entity which came to be known as The Faceless Man have been lost to time, with only a few vague details having survived through legends passed on through the generations. According to these tales, The Faceless Man was said to be the very first Deadite, though the circumstances which saw him receiving this "honor" (as well as who was responsible for this act) are unknown. This legend also stated that the man had the skin removed from his skull, which was then used as the binding of the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis itself.[1]
With this transformation, The Faceless Man gained a power over all the Deadites which followed him, allowing the creatures to roam in the purifying rays of sunlight unscathed as long as he walked the Earth. At an unknown point, The Faceless Man was trapped within an otherworldly prison which was impossible to escape on his own, with the only key to his releasing being a human who was "pure of heart" and speaks his name aloud three times during the entire duration of their life.[2]
Return In 1300 AD[]
For centuries unknown, The Faceless Man remained trapped in a state of limbo until early in the 14th Century, when his name would be spoken aloud by Ash Williams three times. Williams (one of the few "pure of heart") had been warned of The Faceless Man's curse by a witch named Sulevia, and had carelessly said the name twice while in her presence,[2] with the third and final time occurring while regaling Sheila with the tale of his encounter with Sulevia after rescuing her from a Deadite legion.[3]
During this time, humanity's battle against the Deadites became almost constant, as the demons could roam in broad daylight once more courtesy of The Faceless Man's return. The Faceless Man's first known sighting occurred within the spacious lands outside of Castle Kandar, in which he challenged (and defeated) the combined armies of Husayn Abu Dawud and Erik Thunder Axe, two leaders who had been summoned to England to aid in the battle against the undead at the request of Lord Arthur and Henry The Red.[1] Following their defeat, The Faceless Man proceeded to remove the skin of his fallen opponents, which he would later use to construct a great barrier around the cursed graveyard where Ash Williams had previously found the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis.[4]
After discovering the aftermath of The Faceless Man's attack, Ash Williams, along with Sheila and The Wise Man, would follow the trail of death back to the graveyard, where Williams uncovered an underground retreat hidden beneath the large stone altar on which the Necronomicon and it's doppelgangers rested. Testing Ash's might by challenging him with an enormous hand (identical to the one which Ash had lost to evil at the cabin) and the spirit of Linda, The Faceless Man finally revealed himself to Williams, and wasted no time in beginning his attack.[5]
The Faceless Man was merciless with his assault on Ash, beating the time-traveler within an inch of his life and destroying his weapons as if they were nothing. Realizing all of time and space would be threatened to the demon if he failed, Williams made one last attack against The Faceless Man by jamming a single shotgun shell into the monster's eye and striking the firing pin with the handle of a broken sword. The shell exploded, destroying more than half of the creature's head. The smoldering corpse of The Faceless Man collapsed into the murky waters of the hidden chamber, with Williams delivering one final kick to the demon's jaw as an act of victory over his fallen foe.[6]
Powers & Abilities[]
"Resurrection" Curse[]
The Faceless Man was trapped within a limbo-like prison dimension, and could only be resurrected by someone who was "pure of heart" and said his name three times during the entire duration of their life.[2]
Powers[]
- Super-Strength: The Faceless Man easily annihilated the combined armies of Husayn Abu Dawud and Erik Thunder Axe without any need for a weapon.[1]
- Regeneration: In the aftermath of his battle with Husayn Abu Dawud and Erik Thunder Axe's armies, the wounds sustained by The Faceless Man had already healed by the time of his confrontation with Ash Williams several hours later.[5]
- Deadites In Daylight: Perhaps a "side-effect" of being the first Deadite, any Deadite active in the world of the living while The Faceless Man roams the Earth can be in direct sunlight.[1]
