This is about the human cult. You might be looking for the ancient demons of the same name or the Ash vs Evil Dead episode The Dark One.

The Dark Ones were a group of human cultists formed in 3000 BC who worshiped Ereshkigal, the Sumerian goddess of death. Initially devoted followers of the high priest Urigan, later generations of The Dark Ones would later serve as the protectors of the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis.

This iteration of The Dark Ones first appeared in the 2005 Army of Darkness Roleplaying Game by Eden Studios.

History[]

Creation[]

In 3000 BC, the Mesopotamian high priest Urigan formed an alliance with an ancient creature known as "The Watcher In The Woods", as he believed the spirits the demon released were the physical avatars of Ereshkigal, the goddess whom he worshiped. Already a respected figure, Urigan managed to recruit a group of followers which he christened "The Dark Ones" to aid him in overthrowing the government of the city of Kandar. The coup was successful, and Urigan and his followers allowed The Watcher and his spirits free-reign over Kandar and it's denizens. With aid from the great winged-Deadite Beletseri, Urigan and The Dark Ones created the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, a tome which served as the ultimate compendium of all things evil.

Residents of Kandar who managed to escape the terror of the Deadites and The Dark Ones soon formed their own resistance group, led by Enkidu and a warrior from another time. Storming the Temple of Ereshkigal, the rebels fought their way through The Dark Ones before clashing with Urigan and Beletseri themselves. Not all of Urigan's followers were slain, with some fleeing the temple (and the city) as their leader fell to the resistance fighters.

Though they no longer had a true leader, The Dark Ones were still imbued with magic abilities which would allow them to sense when and where someone used the Necronomicon. Subsequent generations of The Dark Ones were said to have been direct descendants of the survivors of Urigan's original order, as they inherited their ancestor's powers to track the book.

1300 AD[]

In the aftermath of the battle of Castle Kandar, a small group of Dark Ones aided a second "army of darkness" by conducting a ritual atop the Cliffs of Blood after reacquiring the Necronomicon. The ceremony was disrupted with a group of time-travelers arrived to combat the Deadites, where they killed all but one member of this group of Dark Ones.

2093 AD[]

The final known appearance of The Dark Ones was in 2093 AD, where they freely operated in the open following the humanity's failed nuclear war against the Deadites. Not much is know about them during this time, though they were seen as a target of interest to a group of human resistance fighters who sought to destroy The Watcher and it's minions for good.
