The Taker of Souls is a malicious demonic entity which feeds on the souls of humans. As it is a being of inestimable age, the creature has appeared to several cultures throughout history, all of which have given it a unique moniker. Some of these known aliases include Shaitan, Bael, Azathoth, Iblis, and Satan.
The Taker of Souls first appeared in the 2013 Evil Dead film directed by Fede Alvarez.
History[]
Early Appearances[]
Humanity's earliest encounters with the Taker of Souls have been lost to time, though the demon was prevalent enough in early history that it became integrated into various religions from around the world.
Modern Times[]
The Taker of Souls resurfaced in the United States sometime in the early 21st Century after being summoned for unknown reasons. During this period, the demon managed to infect a young girl with the spirit of a Deadite, which led her to go on a violent rampage that resulted in the death of her mother. Eventually, the demon was put into a state of hibernation through means unknown.
Incident At The Cabin[]
Sometime after the incident with the unnamed young girl, a man named Eric would discover the ancient tome known as Naturom Demonto in the cellar of a cabin owned by the Allen family. Eric foolishly read-aloud a scratched-out incantation within the book that awakened the Taker of Souls once more. Following it's resurrection, the demon first made it's presence known to Mia Allen, a heroin addict who initially believed the Taker's sudden appearance to be a hallucination (a common symptom of withdrawals). Frightened by this "vision" and fearing the loss of her sanity, Mia attempted to flee the cabin, but the Taker of Souls intervened, causing Mia to wreck her car and run her deeper into the woods.
Eventually led by the demon into a thicket of vines and branches, Mia came face-to-face with the Taker of Souls up-close, horrified to see that it resembled a ghoulish version of herself. The Taker regurgitated a semi-sentient oily black vine that violated the captured Mia, which resulted in a slow transformation into a Deadite. Over the course of following hours, the Taker consumed the souls of the cabin's visitors one by one.
After the Taker of Souls was satiated with his feast, another entity (known as "The Abomination") was allowed to rise from Hell and walk the Earth. The Taker of Souls presumably returned to a dormant state following the arrival of The Abomination.
Notes[]
- The image of the Taker of Souls seen in Naturom Demonto depicts it as a black humanoid figure with crown-like horns and a burning candle protruding from it's head. It is unknown if this is the demon's true form or simply the form in which it appeared to the book's author.
Trivia[]
- The Taker of Souls serves as the 2013 film's equivalent of the Kandarian Demon featured in the original Evil Dead trilogy, possessing many of the same powers and qualities previously depicted by the Demon.
- In the 2011 draft of the Evil Dead script, the Taker of Souls appears to Mia in the form of a possessed malnourished coyote. Between the writing of the draft and filming in mid-2012, the Taker's avatar was changed to Deadite Mia.
