Shemp's Beer (commonly shortened to just "Shemp's") is an American beer brewing company owned and operated by the Shemp family since 1937. The company's beer is a favorite of Ash Williams.
Shemp's first appeared throughout the second season of the Ash vs Evil Dead television show, but has gone on to appear in other Evil Dead expanded media.
History[]
According to the brief history printed on every can of their beer, Shemp's was founded in 1937 by Martin Shemp, who made his first batch in an old shed somewhere in Michigan.
For most of his life, Shemp's was the drink of choice for Ash Williams. Cans both empty and full could often be seen in areas he frequently spent time at, mainly his home in Elk Grove and the floor of his Oldsmobile.
In Other Media[]
- A series of non-canon "in-universe" Shemp's commercials were created to promote Ash vs Evil Dead Season Two. The commercials featured several characters from the series advertising the fictional beer.
- Shemp's first non-television appearance was in issue 0 of the Ash Vs. The Army of Darkness comic series, spread across the floor of Ash's home.
- Cans of Shemp's also appeared in the "Cemetery Man" short story in the Army of Darkness: Halloween Special one-shot comic.
Behind The Scenes[]
The idea for Shemp's beer in Ash vs Evil Dead came from Bruce Campbell, where the name was a direct homage to Campbell's favorite member of The Three Stooges: Samuel "Shemp" Howard. Campbell had previously named another beverage after Howard in his 2008 film My Name Is Bruce, where a whisky bottle could be seen with the label "Shemp's Olde Time Bourbon Whiskey".
