Ash Williams was a 21st Century S-Mart employee turned monster fighter after a weekend trip gone wrong, which ultimately led to him getting tossed across time to 1300 AD. It was during this time that Ash encountered the alien vampire called Vampirella, who was also from the 21st Century.
This version of Ash first appeared in Vampirella/Army of Darkness #1.
Biography[]
After retrieving the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis from a medieval graveyard, Ash and the residents of Castle Kandar trained and waited for an oncoming assault from an army of the undead (that Ash had accidentally raised while trying to remove the Ex-Mortis from it's cradle). One night after a party held in Ash's honor, the time-lost warrior encountered a giant red winged demon woman wandering the castle halls, which he quickly discovered was a vampire. Their battle eventually led outside, with the vampire picking Ash up with her claws and flew into the sky. Just as she was going to drop Ash, the two realized that they were both from the future.
The two determined that when Ash misspoke the magic words in the graveyard, it somehow managed to pull the vampire woman back in time and turned her into a Deadite. After she was released of her Deadite control by eating a page of the Book of The Dead, the woman said that her name was Vampirella. While Ash was happy to see someone else from the future and more than willing to help her get back to the future, the residents of Castle Kandar were not as welcoming, and put her on trial as a witch.
Ash stepped up as her defense attorney against the "primitives", especially Black Friar Thomas, who was a friar from France who apparently had some expertise in dealing with the supernatural and unholy. After passing a series of trials intended to prove her guilty of witchcraft, the Friar exposed himself as a Deadite, and told the humans (and vampire) that his brothers were summoning an army of angels to combat the oncoming "army of darkness". As Ash killed the Friar with a hot iron pipe, Vampirella (still partially connected to the evil forces) realized that it wasn't angels the monks were going to summon, and Ash offered to grab his equipment.
Racing off to the church where Friar Thomas came from, Ash went undercover as a monk in an attempt to convince them to not summon the angels, but the monks revealed that they had done it shortly before his arrival. Ash watched as the angels soared into the sky, and the monks were turned into Deadites. Using his chainsaw and Boomstick, Ash and Vampirella quickly disposed of the Deadite monks, leaving only the "angels" remaining. Vampirella was able to harness some of the evil energy within her and turned into a giant red vampire monster again. Ash climbed on her back and shot the angels out of the sky with his shotgun.
With the "angels" dealt with and the defeat of the undead army coming for the book, Ash eventually returned home to the 21st Century, unknowingly observed by his vampire ally as he disposed of a Deadite customer in S-Mart.

- The residents of 1300 AD referred to Ash as "Ash Housewares", interpreting his one-liner of "The name's Ash. Housewares." (a reference to his job position in S-Mart) as his actual name.
