The Archaeologist (real name unknown) was, as her only known moniker indicated, an archaeologist living in the early-1990s, whose only claim to fame was being part of an expedition team exploring a set of ancient Sumerian ruins, which led to Professor Raymond Knowby's discovery of the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis.
The Archaeologist's first and only appearance was in the Army of Darkness Roleplaying Game released by Eden Studios in 2005.
Biography[]
Very little is known about the background of the Archaeologist, save for the fact that she holds PhDs from two prestigious universities, and is proficient in at least three ancient languages (with one of them being ancient Sumerian).
The Sumerian Expedition[]
In 1993, the Archaeologist was recruited by a team of fellow historians to accompany them on an expedition to closely examine ruins of a Sumerian structure, as her ability to understand and translate the ancient Sumerian language would be needed. Upon entering the ruins, the Archaeologist found various glyphs and pictographs concerning the legend of Gilgamesh, as well as images and stories concerning the civilization's gods and demons.
While the Archaeologist continued to translate and study these glyphs, Professor Raymond Knowby discovered the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis. While many in their group recognized the rarity of the Ex-Mortis, the Archaeologist remained skeptical of the authenticity of such a find (as the ancient Sumerians did not use books), and attempted to distance herself from the expedition should the tome prove to be a hoax of some sort.
Aftermath[]
The decision to distance herself from the discovery of the Ex-Mortis would prove to be an act the Archaeologist would come to regret, as not long after the expedition, Raymond Knowby would publish a book containing notes and translations of various passages from the Ex-Mortis entitled Secrets of The Necronomicon, which quickly became a bestseller. Feeling robbed of her contributions to the expedition, the Archaeologist ventured to Knowby's office with the intent of getting what she was owed, only to find Raymond nowhere in sight. The Archaeologist rummaged through Knowby's files with the hopes of finding the Necronomicon itself, only discovering Raymond's hidden notes containing botched translations from his first examination of the Book of The Dead.
With Knowby's notes and a copy of Secrets of The Necronomicon, the Archaeologist tried to reverse translate the ancient Sumerian passages of the Ex-Mortis by reciting the incantations out loud. The Archaeologist soon realized her mistake, as one of the passages opened up a rift in time, sending her back to the Middle Ages.
What happened to the Archaeologist following her arrive in the Middle Ages remains unknown.
