Ahksa was a large city located in the ancient civilization known as Sumeria. Over the course of several generations, Ahksa became infamous for it's annual "lottery", in which a random denizen of the city was chosen to be sacrificed to the great demon Dagen in exchanged for prosperity to the farmers of the land.
Ahksa first appeared in the 2015 comic book Evil Dead 2: Tales of The Ex-Mortis #1.
History[]
Ahksa was established long before 4000 BC, though the specific time frame is unknown. In these ancient times, Ahksa was a flourishing city unlike any other found in the world at that point in history, nestled in a valley of greenery and located near prosperous farmland just beyond the great walls around the city. Though clearly Ahksa was thriving on it's own, the local mystic feared that one day the city's good fortune would run out, and summoned a demon known as Dagen to the mortal plane using the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis. The mystic struck a deal with Dagen, offering one of the city's occupants as a living sacrifice to the demon annually in exchange for the continued good fortune to the land surrounding Ahksa. Dagen agreed to the mystic's offer, though the demon was to remained trapped in a vast underground pit located on a hilltop not far from the city's boundaries. Not long after this, the government of Ahksa established "the lottery", in which the names of all of the inhabitants of the city were inscribed on stones, with one being pulled at random and read aloud at the city's capital building. The "winner" of the drawing would then be thrown into the pit in which Dagen dwelled, and Ahksa would be blessed with another guaranteed year of prosperity.[1]
What ultimately became the final lottery of Ahksa occurred roughly 4000 BC, five years after the beginning of an endless drought which dried the farmlands to complete ruination and killed the city's livestock. The city's current ruler, Enlil,[2] drew the name of Ishme Ahr from the collection of stones. Accepting of his fate, Ishme was led to the pit several days later and cast into it's depths, coming face to face with Dagen himself. Though Ishme offered himself to the demon, Dagen explained that he did not want another corpse to litter the floor of the cavern, but now craved his own death. Using his power, Dagen had altered the weather in the hopes that one of the denizens of Ahksa would finally slay him and release him from the Earthly plane of existence, though none had succeeded. Believing it to be some sort of trick, Ishme realized that Dagen was not being deceptive about his plea for his demise. Using a sword buried into the mound of skeletal corpses filling the cave, Ishme finally gave Dagen the release of death which he so desperately wanted. Crawling out of the pit, Ishme discovered that dark storm clouds loomed over Ahksa and the valley, a sign that the prosperity once thought lost would soon return.[3]
What happened to the city of Ahksa following these events remains unknown.
